Michael Fullen's began his keynote by explaining three innate human behaviours; being wired to connect, wired to create and wired to help humanity. Life and education can either amplify these innate characteristics or suppress or eradicate them.
These three innate behaviours have formed the bases of much of his research and from this his new project Pedagogies for Deeper Learning has emerged. This project aims to grow these qualities.
These two slides really struck a chord with me. The left slide shows three key aspects of system change. I like the idea of every leader needing to be both an "expert" and an "apprentice".
The second slide points towards where change is most likely to start. Transformational change will begin when we listen to our learners and let them lead their learning. He spoke of students as "agents of change".
Fullen also spoke about our professional development system being broken. We should be focusing on professional learning.
- teachers engaging in inquiry and research into their own practice.
- teachers working collaboratively in transparent ways.
- teachers reflecting on their learning.
He also spoke about using technology as an 'accelerator'.
