Some take home points from the workshops I attended at ULearn15

Charles Newton
Planning to Lead effective pedagogy accelerated by technology
Wednesday 7th October
School vision should drive everything you do
 -  What is powerful for children to learn?
 -  What does powerful teaching and learning look like?

Student Agency!   Today's learners need to have more ownership of their learning.

Data and research
Look at your school data. What is it saying? Look at the research and make connections?

Think creatively about changes in ......time, place, space, and people. What could we change in our schools in order to best meet the needs of our learners.

When leading change within your school
  • Select the best team of people to bring about change.
  • Bring on board a few doubters - if you move them, then they will move the others.
  • Bring on board a critical friend from outside school that can challenge what you are doing.
  • There needs to be ownership. Make sure all the voices in your community are heard.Write it together.
  • Use 'Design Thinking' to challenge those who are not keen to get on board - challenge them to go away and think about the positive and negative aspects and to do some research around their issues.

Jamie Power & Matt Kennedy - Teaching to the boundaries
Golden Sands School,  Papamoa, Tauranga
Wednesday 7th October

Schools need to have a strong VISION. It should be able to be articulated by all.
There should be a robust 'Teaching as Inquiry' cycle within your school.  Teachers need to critically reflect on what they are doing. Ask the question - "What is the pedagogical shift you are going to make in order to make a difference for your kids?

Data Wall - At GSS they have a space in their workroom where tracking sheets are displayed and monitored. This ensures data is relevant and it makes their teaching visible.

Another great idea was using QR codes to link to individual children's portfoliosChildren's photos were displayed on the wall with QR codes below.
