Chrissie Butler lead an amazing session on Universal Design for Learning. Using simple visual prompts Chrissie talked about UDL and the importance of planning for the edges in order to ensure that all students are able to access the curriculum.
In our classrooms we need to be consciously designing for all students.
- Ask students “Is what I’m doing working for you?”
- Ask parents “Is what I’m doing working for your child?”
Spinner - UDL model
We watched a video from the Inclusive education website of a student, Katrina, sharing what she would like teachers to do in order to help her learn. All of the things she mentions in the interview are easy for teachers to implement and will benefit all students. (link to Katrina’s video)
Labels - What language do we use when talking about these students?
We need to be very careful with the language we use, which often puts students down.
Puzzle pieces - You can’t work it out on your own. You need student, family and teachers working together.
Slinky - Universal supports. Technology is about making learning accessible to all. (Tool Kit of supports)
There are lots of technology supports that should be part of your everyday programme and accessible by all.
Mirror - reflection and feedback. It needs to be up-close and honest. She referred to it as ‘bathroom honesty’. The level you use when critiquing yourself in the bathroom mirror.
